A strong pacific system will be settling in for Tuesday with high gusting winds on the front end relaxing as the brunt of this system moves into the west. The supporting dynamics of this system are thin but impressive and up to 12? is possible before it starts to clear the area through Tuesday afternoon. Weaker waves settling in on this first one?s heels will feed rain and snow showers through Wednesday and Thursday. Short of some reinforcement the later parts of this forecasted moisture will be unimpressive but the combination will mean sloppy conditions for most of the work week.
IN THE EXTENDED LOCAL FORECAST
For Crested Butte: The higher terrain will see the most impressive snowfall through early Tuesday and continuing into the afternoon. The brunt will clear the area Tuesday night but a warmer secondary wave will offer variable conditions through Thursday.
For Gunnison: The current trajectory and colder core of this next system will mean snow valley wide. Snow levels are set to stay around 7000ft but the warmer wave on the tail end will introduce rain to the lower valleys earlier. Expect sloppy condition through Thursday.
Resort Report
Well an incredible season has come to an end. We saw record snow fall that left us with a 100? base on the closing day. The lift access season may be over but this snow will fuel a great wild flower and mountain biking season. The melt is on with dry warm conditions and hiking or biking season suddenly doesn?t feel that far off. Stay tuned for updates on summer specials and events and have a great spring.
Backcountry and Avalanche Report
This winter has offered some of the most incredible snow that the area has seen in decades and the backcountry is as full and potentially dangerous as one would expect. We have turned the corner into spring and variable layers are starting show themselves. With the freeze thaw cycle you will need to account for temperature and slope history. The spring season will be long with this snow but definitely know what to expect, take all necessary precautions and check the CB Avalanche Center?s daily report for snow conditions at www.cbavalanchecenter.org .
