Sipapu

Sipapu Ski Area is nestled in the Pecos Wilderness and the Carson National Forest along the banks of the Rio Pueblo in northern New Mexico.

The ski area was founded in 1952 by Lloyd and Olive Bolander. They wanted to improve on the skiing that was available two miles down the road at the now defunct Agua Piedra Ski Club. That year they installed a 100 foot long rope tow. In 1953, they bought thirty pairs of used rental skis and the rental shop was started. Skiers were charged 50 cents a day to ski.The word Sipapu means "land of paradise" or "spirit place."

The convenient location of the lifts and the variety of intermediate runs for downhill skiing and snowboarding make this a favorite year-round family resort. Sipapu offers a range of on-site accommodations: duplexes, suites, apartments, cabins, dormitories and a trailer park with complete hookups. There is a full-service restaurant filled with rustic charm and a cozy, paneled lodge with a stone fireplace for apres-ski.
